“It’s not my fault!” How often do we hear that on a daily basis? How often do we SAY that on a daily basis?
One glaring problem with modern society is the absolute neglect of personal responsibility. We see it all the time in movies and tv shows, especially talk shows with doctors of psychology who want to give all the reasons why a person technically can’t be held responsible because of one thing or another. Don’t get me wrong, there are many legitimate issues that cause uncontrollable behavior; however, has our society become so sensitive to this that now we hesitate to hold anyone accountable?
School is a very easy place to see this problem. Students have a plethora of reasons why their homework is not complete or they lack the required classroom materials. Instead of just owning up to a simple mistake, kids think it better to dig into a deeper hole by attempting to create a “legitimate” excuse of why they should not be punished for their mistake. While their lack of maturity makes this to be expected, too many adults attempt the same thing.
My mind goes to Matthew 7. Many people will stand before God one day to be judged for their sin. In that day, they will have many excellent excuses as to why their sin should be forgiven. They will say, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” The Lord’s response to these individuals is possibly the most dreaded, “I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” There is no excuse. We will be held accountable for our actions.
Praise God that we do not need excuses! He has given us His Son that we may be forgiven. We are guilty. We are deserving of punishment. There is no reason to make an excuse because sin is sin. Instead of digging into a deeper hole, own up to your faults and accept the precious gift of salvation that He so freely offers.
Stay faithful as you…
Walk in Him.
