Christian Walk, History, Life, Personal

“I Surrender All”

All to Jesus I surrender

All to Him I freely give.

I will ever love and trust Him

In His presence daily live.

I surrender all; I surrender all

All to Thee my precious Savior

I surrender all.

What church doesn’t know this hymn or use it as a frequent invitational song? Its popularity has grown since its first publication back in 1897.

The words were written by Judson Wheeler VanDeventer. A middle-aged man from Dundee, MI who had spent most of his life pursuing an art career. He had even traveled throughout Europe to give himself the best chance at being successful in that field; however, one night he made a decision that completely altered his life’s career. He decided to follow the Lord’s leading into evangelism.

While most would see that at a foolish decision to throw away everything he had worked for, Judson chose the path that would be so much more meaningful. He was willing to give all to Christ knowing that only what is done for God will last. Now he could have served God completely through art, but the Lord called him into ministry, and the result is amazing. Not only did he pen the words to one of the most powerful hymns of the 20th century, but he was also influential is causing others to follow Christ’s leading. The most notable individual was Billy Graham who claimed Judson Wheeler VanDeventer was responsible for Graham’s pursuit of ministry.

What is God calling you to do? Don’t hold back. If He’s calling you to serve Him, nothing else will satisfy. Be willing to “surrender all” as you…

Walk in Him.
